BELLBROOK — One team will get into the win column in a county rivalry matchup in Week 3.
Xenia travels to take on Bellbrook with both teams still searching for the first win of the season. Xenia hung tough in the season opener against Carroll, but the Bucs were overpowered last week in a 49-6 loss at Troy. Xenia’s offense has struggled through two games, managing only 162 yards per game. Sophomore quarterback Zack Newsock is 3-of-16 passing on the season for 32 yards. Newsock has scored the only two touchdowns of the season for the Bucs, both on goal line runs.
“Zack has been running the offense well, but we just can’t get to where we are out of our comfort zone,” Xenia head coach Bob DeLong said.
One of the lone bright spots for the Bucs on offense has been the play of running back Will Jackson. Jackson has 104 yards on 23 carries in two games. Brice Womack has 55 yards on 14 attempts, while Marcus Allen has 41 yards on 13 carries. Danny Thomas is the leading receiver with one catch for 30 yards.
As much as Xenia’s offense has struggled, Bellbrook has had just as much trouble if not more. The Golden Eagles have been shutout in both games this season, 13-0 by Miamisburg and 27-0 by Alter last week.
“We just are not finding a way to score points,” Bellbrook head coach Kevin Basinger said. “We are making mistakes when we have the ball in scoring position. We need to capitalize.”
The Golden Eagles defense hasn’t played that bad, but the lack of points has put the D in bad situations. The Bellbrook defense did a nice job of slowing down a high-powered Alter offense for one half in Week 2, but Alter reeled off 281 total yards after halftime to put the game away. The Knights finished with 363 total yards.
“We are going to keep working hard and we’ll figure it out,” Basinger said.
